I have always been fascinated by rocks and minerals and, as a geologist, most of my working life has been spent surveying, observing and recording stone in its many forms.
Since 2001, combining my interests in geology and photography, I have been working on my Glowing Edges Designs artwork project - based on rocks and minerals viewed with a petrological microscope.
Once a suitable specimen has been found, a thin slice is cut and mounted on a glass slide and then ground down with fine abrasives until it is only 0.03mm thick. When shone through this thin rock section, the polarised light is refracted by the internal crystallographic structure of the minerals to produce an astonishing array of vivid colours, which vary according to both their chemical composition and orientation.
Using FUJI Velvia colour film to record my observations, I have retained the essential character of the rock wherever possible but, using some of the tools of modern digital imaging technology, I have manipulated some of them to produce spectacular geometrical images - which can be blown up to a very large size.
Originally designed to produce a big splash of colour on the walls of modern bars, cafés, clubs and restaurants, or to decorate my living room walls, I have since experimented with ceramic tiles, tableware and a ceramicised basalt table, which was made in Sicily.
I am currently selling my luxury Crepe de Chine silk scarves, whose dimensions and colours can be tailored to the customer's requirements and, to order, my Glowing Edges Designs are also available as fashion fabrics - for sarongs etc. - in rayon, cotton and silk.
